Arroyo Believes List Of 104 Includes Him

Oct 31, 2014 6:12 AM

Bronson Arroyo wouldn't be surprised if his name is on the list of 104 players that tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. Arroyo had heard that a then-legal supplement he was using was tainted with steroids, the Boston Herald has reported. The pitcher, formerly a teammate of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez in Boston, added that he didn't know if the two sluggers were using PEDs back in 2003. Arroyo doesn't think anyone's accomplishments should be considered diminished in the wake of continued steroid leaks. "In my mind, I think you have to lump the whole era together," Arroyo said. "A lot of people were doing it, a lot weren't. I think pitchers probably gained three or four mph on their pitches and power hitters got some more power. "But guys like David and Manny, if they did something, it didn't make them who they were. Did it make them a little better? Probably,"

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz received confirmation from the Players Association that he did test positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. "I've just been told that the report is true," Ortiz said in a statement. "Based on the way I lived my life I'm surprised to learn I tested positive." Ortiz added that he intends to find out what was in his system and that he won't hide anything. "You know me ? I will not hide and I will not make excuses," he told the Associated Press.

Union In Uproar Over Latest 'Steroid List' Leak

Oct 31, 2014 9:22 PM

Union officials have asked federal courts to investigate who is leaking the names of the 104 players that tested positive during Major League Baseball's 2003 steroid survey. The request is at the center of an ongoing legal feud between the Players Association and the government. According to a source close to the union, the Players Association is asking courts to find out how the information is being obtained and if it is coming from any person covered by a court order sealing information about the case. The New York Times cited "lawyers with knowledge of the results" when outing David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez on Thursday.

Canseco: Member Of HOF Among Users

Oct 31, 2014 8:36 AM

Jose Canseco wasn't surprised to hear that Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs back in 2003. "When you tell me something I didn't already know, I'll be surprised," Canseco told ESPN on Thursday. "And I'll tell you this, Major League Baseball is going to have a big, big problem on their hands when they find out they have a Hall of Famer who's used." When asked the name of the Hall of Famer, Canseco refused to add to the controversial comments. "It's not about naming names," he said. "I've never had anything against the players. It's always been against Major League Baseball. I know who's on that list, but like I said, it's not about attacking the players. It's about the machine that allowed this to happen. What I speak out of my mouth is the truth. It burns like fire. Just remember, I have never lied about this subject."

Yankees Become Frugal Shoppers At Deadline

The New York Times claims that co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner has told general manager Brian Cashman that he is against the team spending any more money.

Buehrle Sets Record With 45 Straight Outs

Jun 21, 2014 2:15 AM

Coming off a perfect game last week, White Sox starter Mark Buehrle retired the first 17 batters he faced on Tuesday night. He set a Major League record with 45 straight outs before the Twins rallied against the White Sox. Buehrle wound up allowing five runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings, but was perfect through 5 2/3 innings against Minnesota. "It's just frustrating after a loss," Buehrle said after the loss of the record. "It might mean more tomorrow or the next day once I cool off. But I'm not too happy right now."

Wilpon: Minaya Made A Mistake

Sep 17, 2014 10:35 AM

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon acknowledged Tuesday that general manager Omar Minaya made a mistake by singling out a reporter during a press conference on Monday. "Ownership is not happy with the direction of the team," Wilpon said before New York's game against Colorado. Minaya held a press conference on Monday to announce the firing of vice president of player development Tony Bernazard. The GM accused Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News of lobbying for a job with the club in an embarrassing tirade. "He was just very angry and got out of his normal mode of dealing with the media," Wilpon said of Minaya. "Going into that press conference, it was to talk about Tony, talk about letting him go." "I can only apologize from the club's point of view," Wilpon said. The COO added that Minaya remains shaken by the incident. "I think he really understands he made a very large mistake here. He apologized to ownership, he apologized to the staff," Wilpon said. "Omar has told me he's remorseful about what he said."

Blue Jays Owner Seeks To Control Costs

Sep 26, 2014 7:21 AM

The company that owns the Blue Jays is looking to control the team's costs. Rogers Communications, which purchased the Blue Jays in 2000, remains committed to the club. "We believe that the financial performance of the Blue Jays can improve," said Tony Viner, president of Rogers Media, the corporate arm responsible for the team, stadium and broadcasting. "In fact, it's the one division of the media company this year, year over year performance is better than it was. We think that we can bring costs reasonably under control and more in line with revenues. "Our revenues are actually increasing in certain parts of the business so, as you know, the Jays form an important part of our programming schedule on Rogers Sportsnet, which is another division of the company which has done recently well and especially during the recession."

Matsuzaka At Odds With Red Sox?

Sep 17, 2014 11:01 PM

An article that appeared in Japan on Monday reveals that Daisuke Matsuzaka is at odds with the Red Sox. In the story, Dice-K suggested that his effectiveness and health are being negatively impacted by Boston's training techniques. He also blamed his current predicament on the team's inability to meet the needs of Japanese pitchers. Matsuzaka is currently in Fort Myers while on the 15-day disabled list with what the team is describing as a mild right shoulder strain. "If I'm forced to continue to train in this environment, I may no longer be able to pitch like I did in Japan," Matsuzaka is quoted as saying in the article, which was translated for WEEI. "The only reason why I managed to win games during the first and second years (in the U.S.) was because I used the savings of the shoulder I built up in Japan. Since I came to the Major Leagues, I couldn't train in my own way, so now I've lost all those savings."

Myers Could Return In 2009 As Reliever

Aug 6, 2014 8:29 PM

Brett Myers could return to the mound for the Phillies as a reliever by the end of the season. Myers, who is looking to return sooner than expected from hip surgery, believes that coming out of the bullpen would also help bolster Philadelphia's pitching staff. "I just felt like for me to get back quicker, it would have to be out of the bullpen," Myers told the Philadelphia Daily News. "Who knows? Maybe at some point after throwing a few games out of the bullpen, if I'm stretched out to 75 pitches, we'll see what happens. You never know." The Phillies are currently without three relievers, but all are expected to come off the disabled soon relatively soon. "[The therapist] basically kept encouraging me. So then I was like, 'I'll show you I can do more.' And he was like, 'I can't believe you're doing this, I can't believe you're doing that, I haven't seen anything like this before,' " Myers said. "He wasn't saying definitely, but after seeing both [the surgeon and therapist] July 1, they said there's no doubt in their mind I could be back at some point mid-to-late August."
